The movement has taken its roots and traditions from the first actions of the Macedonian Council of the European Movement, founded in Skopje, in 1991.
The Council was one of the first non-governmental organizations established in the Republic of Macedonia in the course of political pluralization.
Soon it became associated member of the International European Movement, in 1992 and was among the first councils in Central and Eastern Europe acquiring full membership in the IEM, in 1993.
Meanwhile, significant efforts to promote contacts and cooperation with other parts of the European Movement in Europe have been made, particularly in the CEE - region, joining so the endeavours to create a real United Europe.
The Macedonian Council of the European Movement has in the meantime organized numerous of debates, conferences, round-tables and international gatherings, aimed at promoting the idea of Europe in the country and around.
Early in the year 2002, several founders and new members have re-established the movement adopted a refreshed Statute and Action Programme for the years 2002-2004, at an Assembly held in Skopje on April 18. 2002.
